As an executive, you carry a significant responsibility—not just for the company’s bottom line, but for the well-being of your team. However, in the drive to “help,” you might unintentionally create stress, strain, and frustration. To be an effective leader, it’s crucial to take care of your own wellness first. A healthy leader makes better decisions, listens more carefully, and fosters a positive, thriving team culture.

Here’s how you can maintain your own wellness to ensure you’re leading effectively without adding unnecessary stress to your team.

1. Recognize the Signs: Are You Helping or Controlling?

When a leader is feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or under pressure, it’s easy to slip into micromanagement mode. You might feel the urge to establish rigid guidelines, enforce strict rules, or “fix” everything for your team. While this may seem like you’re bringing order to chaos, it often backfires, causing confusion and stress.

A healthy leader recognizes when they’re trying to control too much. Step back and ask yourself: Am I providing solutions that empower my team, or am I adding undue pressure because I’m feeling overwhelmed or that I “have” to take action?

2. Prioritize Your Own Wellness

A leader who is burnt out or stressed will likely project that stress onto their team. Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health to ensure you’re in the right frame of mind to lead effectively. When you prioritize your own wellness, you’re less likely to make reactive decisions that add strain to others.

What this looks like:

Regular self-care: Set aside time for exercise, meditation, or other stress-relieving activities that allow you to recharge.

Healthy boundaries: Avoid overloading yourself with too many tasks or responsibilities. Delegate when necessary.

Emotional regulation: Practice techniques like mindfulness or journaling to manage stress before it impacts your leadership.

3. Embrace Vulnerability: You Don’t Have to Have All the Answers

One common pitfall for leaders is the belief that they need to have all the answers. This can lead to creating unnecessary rules or guidelines out of fear that your leadership will appear weak if you don’t step in. A healthy leader knows it’s okay to admit uncertainty and involve their team in the problem-solving process.

What this looks like:

Ask for input: Let your team know you’re open to their suggestions and ideas for tackling challenges.

Be transparent: If you’re unsure about the best course of action, share your thoughts with your team. Transparency builds trust and reduces the pressure to have it all figured out.

Cultivate a culture of collaboration: When employees feel heard and valued, they’re more likely to offer solutions that are effective and reduce stress.

4. Lead with Empathy

A healthy leader leads with empathy, which requires understanding the emotional and mental state of your team. When you’re healthy and grounded, you’re better equipped to recognize when your well-meaning actions might be adding unnecessary pressure.

Empathy allows you to listen actively and truly understand what your team needs—rather than assuming you know the best solution from your perspective.

What this looks like:

Regular check-ins: Not just about work tasks, but about how your team members are feeling.

Non-judgmental listening: Give space for your team to express frustrations or concerns without immediately jumping to “fix” things.

Adaptability: Be willing to change or loosen guidelines when they aren’t serving the team, showing that you trust their feedback.

5. Focus on Long-Term Well-Being, Not Just Short-Term Fixes

When you’re not taking care of your own wellness, it’s easy to focus on quick, short-term solutions. You might implement strict rules or guidelines that seem to solve immediate problems but create long-term issues for your team’s morale and well-being.

A healthy leader balances short-term needs with long-term team sustainability. This means looking beyond quick fixes and fostering an environment where the team feels supported, trusted, and empowered to take ownership of their work.

What this looks like:

Strategic decision-making: Ask yourself if a rule or process change will help your team thrive in the long run.

Empowering leadership: Focus on creating structures that give your team autonomy and flexibility rather than rigid constraints.

Wellness as a priority: Make sure you’re not just pushing for productivity at the cost of your team’s wellness—and your own.

Final Thoughts: As an executive, your well-being directly impacts your leadership. When you take care of yourself—physically, emotionally, and mentally—you lead with clarity, empathy, and purpose. This, in turn, ensures that you’re not unintentionally adding stress or strain to your team. Healthy leadership is about empowering others, not controlling them, and that begins with prioritizing your own wellness.

If you’ve known me for any length of time, you know I love my coffee. You know I spent years consuming as much Starbucks as I could get my hands on. I looked for any excuse to grab coffee with a friend or teammate at work.

Coffee ran my life.

It ran my life because I needed the energy and stimulation it brought. I was chronically stressed, I wasn’t sleeping well, and I had zero energy as a result. It often took 2-3 Venti mochas just for me to make it through my day. So, I wasn’t only getting huge amounts of caffeine, but sugar as well, to spike my energy levels. The minute I started to crash, I went back for more sugar and coffee.

When I started my health journey, I gave up the sugary mochas, but I declared no one was going to make me give up my coffee.

I still haven’t given up coffee, but the way I consume it has changed, especially over the last 6 months.

What I didn’t know years ago was that the caffeine I was consuming was actually making my chronic stress worse and contributing to my lack of sleep (even when I would have told you caffeine had no affect on me).

When caffeine is ingested, it blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, leading to increased alertness and the release of adrenaline. This process triggers the body’s stress or “fight or flight” response, which elevates heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels—the primary stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels, in turn, can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and stress, particularly in individuals who are already prone to these conditions. Studies have shown that habitual caffeine consumption can increase baseline cortisol levels, suggesting a sustained stress response over time (PMID: 22189354).

You can probably picture this – all you’ve had for breakfast is caffeine, your adrenaline is already spiking, and then you get into a stressful situation (commute to work, an inbox full of emails, an intense meeting). Your already stressed system just becomes more stressed and you cross into overwhelm, anxiety, etc. And your stress has just self-perpetuated.

So, what can you do? There are a few options.

Drink your caffeine after you eat, not before. At minimum, have your caffeine with food instead of on an empty stomach.

Drinking caffeine with food helps reduce its impact on stress by slowing the absorption of caffeine into the bloodstream. This leads to a more gradual release of energy and reduces the sharp spike in cortisol and adrenaline that occurs when caffeine is consumed on an empty stomach. The presence of nutrients from food also helps stabilize blood sugar, mitigating the jitteriness and heightened stress response that caffeine can trigger on its own.

Slowly reduce the amount of caffeine you consume. When I decided I wanted to completely switch to decaf coffee, I did it gradually. I switch to half caffeine, mixing decaf and regular strength beans together. Then I ordered 1/3 caffeine coffee. Once I had gone through that order, I made the switch to all decaf.

Gradually reducing caffeine intake can help minimize withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, irritability, and fatigue. It also allows the body to adjust naturally, reducing reliance on caffeine for energy while stabilizing cortisol levels. This process can lead to improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and better long-term stress management, as the body becomes less dependent on caffeine’s stimulating effects.

Find a 3rd party-tested mold and mycotoxin free coffee. I researched several coffee companies and finally landed on Purity Coffee. What I really like about this company is that they publish all of their contaminant testing online for you to see. Get $10 off your first order with this link.

Choosing a third-party tested, mold- and mycotoxin-free coffee is important for reducing stress and supporting overall health. Mold and mycotoxins in low-quality coffee can contribute to inflammation, fatigue, and anxiety, potentially worsening stress levels. By opting for cleaner coffee, you’re minimizing exposure to harmful compounds, which helps support cognitive function, energy levels, and better stress management. This ensures you’re getting the benefits of coffee without the added burden on your body.

My relationship with coffee has evolved significantly over the years. I now prioritize how and when I consume caffeine, ensuring it’s not on an empty stomach and focusing on quality, third-party-tested coffee to minimize harmful toxins. By gradually reducing my caffeine intake and switching to decaf, I’ve noticed improvements in my stress levels, energy, and overall health.

If you’re looking to reduce stress and improve your well-being, small changes to your caffeine routine can make a big difference—without giving up coffee entirely.

Pumpkin spice season is officially upon us! While there’s no shortage of pumpkin spice lattes and treats, many of these seasonal favorites are loaded with sugar and artificial ingredients. But what if you could enjoy the flavors of fall in a healthier way? Enter: Probiotic Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream. Made with nourishing ingredients like grass-fed kefir and milk, this creamy delight is perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth while keeping your gut happy.

Why Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream?

Pumpkin spice is more than just a trendy flavor; it’s a delicious blend of spices with health benefits. Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, making them a great addition to your diet. Combined with the probiotic-rich kefir and the nutrient-dense pumpkin puree, this ice cream is a treat that you can feel good about indulging in.

The Benefits of Grass-Fed Kefir and Milk

One of the key ingredients in this pumpkin spice ice cream is grass-fed kefir. Kefir is a fermented dairy product that’s rich in probiotics (live and active cultures), which support a healthy gut microbiome. A healthy gut is linked to improved digestion, better immune function, and even enhanced mood and mental health. Grass-fed milk is another star ingredient, offering higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and other essential nutrients compared to conventional milk. Together, these ingredients create a creamy, nutrient-packed base for our ice cream.

How to Make Healthy Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream

Making this delicious ice cream is easier than you might think, especially with the help of the Ninja Creami. Here’s how you can whip up a batch at home:

Ingredients:

1 cup grass-fed kefir

1/2 cup grass-fed milk

1/2 cup pumpkin puree

2 Tbsp maple syrup or honey

1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of sea salt

Instructions:

Blend: Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Freeze: Pour the mixture into a Ninja Creami pint container, leaving some space at the top. Freeze the container for 24 hours.

Process: Once frozen, use the Ninja Creami to process the mixture into creamy ice cream. I used the Ice Cream setting for the first spin. I used the “re-spin” option twice adding 1 Tbsp of milk each time.

Serve: Enjoy immediately for a soft-serve consistency, or refreeze for a firmer texture.

This ice cream is not only a great way to enjoy the flavors of fall, but it also supports your health with every bite. It’s free from refined sugars and artificial ingredients, making it a dessert you can feel good about serving to your family.

Customize Your Ice Cream

One of the best parts about this recipe is its versatility. You can easily adjust the sweetness by adding more or less maple syrup or honey. For an extra dose of protein, consider adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder to the mix. If you’re feeling adventurous, toss in some chopped nuts or mini dark chocolate chips as a mix-in at the end of the Creami process.

Enjoying Fall the Healthy Way

Pumpkin spice season doesn’t have to mean giving up on your health goals. With this Probiotic Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—a delicious, creamy treat that’s also good for you. Whether you’re serving it at a fall gathering or enjoying it on a cozy night in, this ice cream is sure to become a seasonal favorite.

So, go ahead and embrace the flavors of fall with this guilt-free indulgence. Your taste buds and your body will thank you!

Why You’ll Love These Sliders

Quick & Simple: Ready in about 35 minutes from start to finish.

Kid-Friendly: Fun-sized and delicious, these sliders are a hit with children.

Customizable: Easily adapt the sliders with various toppings or use different sauces to keep dinner exciting.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the Sliders:

Mini whole grain slider buns (or gluten-free sliders – I used Canyon Bakehouse)

Lean ground turkey breast

Cheddar cheese (or your choice of cheese)

Spices like garlic powder and onion powder

Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles

For the Honey Mustard Sauce:

Dijon mustard

Honey

Optional mayonnaise for creaminess

Optional apple cider vinegar for a tangy kick

Step-by-Step Guide

Preheat and Prep: Begin by heating your oven to 350°F (175°C) and cooking your seasoned ground turkey until fully browned.

Whip Up the Sauce: While the turkey cooks, mix up your honey mustard sauce in a bowl. Adjust the ingredients to taste for the perfect blend of sweet and tangy.

Assemble the Sliders: Lay the slider buns on a baking tray, pile on the turkey, drizzle with the honey mustard sauce, add a slice of cheese, and top with the bun tops.

Bake: Brush a mixture of melted butter and a touch of mustard on the buns and sprinkle with sesame seeds for an extra crunch. Cover with foil and bake until the cheese is delightfully melted.

Serve: Serve these mouthwatering sliders warm with extra honey mustard sauce and your choice of toppings.

Pro Tips

Avoid Dryness: Keep an eye on the turkey as it cooks to ensure it remains juicy and tender.

Serving Suggestion: Pair the sliders with veggie sticks, sweet potato fries, or a fresh vegetable salad for a balanced meal.

Make Ahead: These sliders are great for meal prep. Assemble ahead and pop them in the oven when you’re ready to eat!

Picture this: you have had a long day, it’s a practice night or game night for your kiddos, and you need a quick and easy dinner that you can make while overseeing homework. Not hard to picture right?

Enter pizza pasta! It has 4 ingredients, is quick and easy – as long as it takes to boil water and cook pasta, and it’s filled with protein and fiber. What could be better?

Pizza pasta has become a weekly staple at our house. I came up with it – or at least my version of it – earlier this year when my son started his elimination diet. He just wanted something “normal” to eat and asked if he could have a pizza bowl from our local pizza place. I didn’t trust their ingredients to be “free” from all of the things he wasn’t supposed to have. I could have made a pizza bowl at home, but since he won’t eat veggies, it would have been sauce and meat only.

I had already made my own quick and easy spaghetti sauce for him. I thought, what if I made that sauce, added some Italian sausage and uncured pepperoni from our local farm, and put it over some sort of gluten-free, whole grain pasta?

And, pizza pasta was born.

I found Barilla’s chickpea rotini, which has 21g of protein per serving and 15g of fiber. I opted for this over their red lentil rotini just because I wasn’t sure how red pasta would be taken. I do plan on introducing the red lentil rotini though (I mean – once it’s covered in sauce, who can tell? Probably my picky 12 yr old….hmmm). It has 25g of protein and 11g of fiber per serving. Either of them is a great pasta! And, if you are watching your carbs, you can use any of the substitutes for pasta – zucchini noodles, heart of palm pasta, or steamed veggies.

You can check my post for my sauce recipe if you want to make your own. I eventually found Rao’s pizza sauce once he was off his elimination diet. I wish it was organic, but other than that, it’s a clean sauce with no additives or preservatives.

For the meat part of it, I use 1 lb of Italian sausage and a package of uncured pepperoni that I get from our local meat farm. I highly recommend this option if you have it available to you. It will be a much cleaner and fresher option that is minimally processed. If you don’t have access to a meat farm, then I would opt for a brand like Applegate or maybe a store brand that is minimally processed.

This recipe meets all of the criteria for quick and easy and healthy for active kiddos! Grab the recipe below and leave a comment if you make it!

Are you always on the hunt for a great breakfast option that is easy and your kiddos will love? Me, too! I recently found discovered baked oatmeal, and it checks all of the boxes. I used to make lemon blueberry breakfast cake as a special treat, for things like the first day back to school. But, even with my adaptations, I couldn’t make it as healthy and filling as I wanted. So, while I’ll still make the breakfast cake every so often, this Lemon Blueberry Baked Oatmeal is my new back-to-school favorite. Packed with protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats, it’s designed to keep your kiddos full and energized all morning long.

Why It’s a Great Choice

Nutrient-Dense Ingredients: This baked oatmeal is made with rolled oats, which are a fantastic source of complex carbohydrates and fiber. The addition of fresh blueberries provides a burst of antioxidants and vitamins, while the lemon adds a refreshing twist. For a boost of healthy fats, you can drizzle it with coconut butter or your favorite nut butter, ensuring a balanced meal that supports steady energy levels and optimal brain function.

Protein-Packed: Incorporating ingredients like eggs or a scoop of your preferred protein powder can elevate the protein content, making it even more satisfying. This protein boost is essential for growing kids, aiding in muscle development and keeping hunger at bay.

Adaptable and Versatile: One of the best aspects of this recipe is its versatility. You can easily swap out blueberries for other berries such as strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries. This not only keeps the breakfast exciting and varied but also allows you to use whatever fresh or frozen berries you have on hand.

Convenient and Time-Saving: This baked oatmeal recipe is perfect for busy mornings. It makes multiple servings in one go, meaning you can prepare it once and have breakfast ready for several days. I like to make mine on Sundays so it’s ready for the week. Just slice, reheat, and serve! It’s a great way to ensure your kids have a nutritious start to their day even when time is tight.

Enjoy the ease and health benefits of this Lemon Blueberry Baked Oatmeal, knowing you’re providing your kids with a meal that will keep them satisfied and ready to tackle their day. Whether you’re preparing for a busy school week or simply want a reliable breakfast option, this recipe is sure to become a family favorite.

As kids head back to school, packing a nutritious and balanced lunch is key to helping kids maintain their energy and focus throughout the day. Just like breakfast, a well-balanced lunch that includes protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats is essential for stabilizing blood sugar levels and sustaining energy. This ensures kids can stay attentive and engaged until the end of the school day.

The Importance of a Balanced Lunch

A balanced lunch provides a combination of nutrients that help maintain stable blood sugar levels, preventing the afternoon energy slump and aiding in concentration and learning. Just as with the quick and easy back-to-school breakfasts, the goal is to include:

Protein: For muscle repair and keeping kids full longer.

Complex Carbohydrates: For sustained energy release.

Healthy Fats: For brain health and overall well-being.

As the new school year approaches, mornings can become a whirlwind of activity. Ensuring your kids start the day with a nutritious breakfast can be a challenge, especially when their food preferences seem to change daily. Having a few go-to breakfast options that are both quick and balanced can make all the difference in maintaining their energy and focus throughout the morning.

Understanding Your Kids’ Preferences

It’s important to recognize that kids can be unpredictable with their food choices. One day they might love scrambled eggs, and the next day they can’t stand the sight of them. To navigate this, try to keep a variety of breakfast staples on hand. This way, you can easily switch up their meals while ensuring they get the nutrients they need.

The Breakfast Structure: Protein, Complex Carbs, and Healthy Fats

A balanced breakfast should include a mix of protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. This combination helps stabilize blood sugar levels, providing a steady stream of energy and helping kids stay focused until lunchtime.

Protein: Essential for growth and repair, protein also helps keep kids feeling full longer. Great sources include eggs, Greek yogurt, nut butters, and lean meats.

Complex Carbs: These provide sustained energy. Opt for options like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. For example, overnight oats made with rolled oats are a better choice than instant oatmeal because they digest more slowly, helping to avoid mid-morning energy crashes.

Healthy Fats: Necessary for brain development and overall health, healthy fats can be found in foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and certain oils.

Balancing Blood Sugar with Slow-Digesting Carbs

Keeping blood sugar levels stable is key to maintaining your child’s energy and attention throughout the morning. Slow-digesting carbs, like those found in whole grains and certain fruits, help prevent spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels.

Healthy Staples to Keep on Hand

Stocking your kitchen with healthy staples can make preparing quick and nutritious breakfasts much easier. Here are some essentials:

Whole Grain Breads: Opt for brands like Dave’s Killer Bread, which are packed with fiber and nutrients without pesticides.

Organic and Natural Nut or Seed Butters: Choose those with no added sugars or oils. Look for brands that only have 1-2 ingredients: the nuts/seeds and maybe salt.

Organic Rolled Oats: Brands like One Degree Foods offer organic rolled oats, which are perfect for slow-digesting carbs. These oats are also certified gluten-free and glyphosate-free.

Organic Berries: Keep a variety of fresh or frozen berries on hand. They are rich in antioxidants and vitamins.

Pasture-Raised Eggs: These eggs are higher in omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients compared to conventional eggs.

Greek Yogurt: A great source of protein and probiotics. Opts for organic, plain Greek yogurt to avoid a ton of added sugar.

Chia Seeds: High in fiber and omega-3s, they can be easily added to many dishes.

Avocados: Packed with healthy fats and versatile for many recipes.

Fresh Fruits: Bananas, apples, and other fruits provide natural sweetness and essential vitamins. Opt for organic for anything that doesn’t have an inedible peel or consult the EWG’s dirty dozen.

Protein Powder: If your kids won’t eat eggs or any other type of typical protein, adding protein powder to smoothies or overnight oatmeal is a great way to add some flavor and pack in the protein.

Mix and Match Breakfast Ideas

Here are some mix-and-match ideas using the healthy staples outlined above:

As the new school year approaches, both parents and kids often experience a mix of excitement and anxiety. Transitioning from the relaxed summer days to the structured school routine can be challenging. However, with some planning and organization, you can create an stress-free back-to-school routine that sets a positive tone for the entire year. Here are some of my favorite tips to help you and your children ease into the school year smoothly.

1. Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule

One of the most significant changes from summer to school is the sleep schedule. Gradually adjust your child’s bedtime and wake-up time a week or two before school starts. Consistent sleep is crucial for your child’s health, mood, and ability to concentrate in school. Aim for 9-11 hours of sleep for younger children and 8-10 hours for teenagers.

2. Create a Morning Routine

A well-planned morning routine can significantly reduce stress. Lay out clothes, pack lunches, and organize school bags the night before. Create a checklist for the morning tasks, such as brushing teeth, getting dressed, and eating breakfast. A visual schedule can be particularly helpful for younger children. Ensure there is enough time for everything to avoid rushing and starting the day with unnecessary stress.

3. Plan Nutritious Meals and Snacks

Balanced meals and snacks are vital for maintaining energy levels and concentration throughout the day. Plan and prepare healthy breakfasts, lunches, and snacks in advance. Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. Involve your children in meal planning and preparation to make them more excited about eating healthy foods.

4. Set Up a Homework Station

Designate a quiet, organized space for homework and study. Ensure it is free from distractions and stocked with necessary supplies like pencils, paper, and a calculator. Establish a routine for homework time, and be available to help if needed. Consistency and organization in the study area can enhance focus and productivity.

5. Manage After-School Activities

While extracurricular activities are essential for a well-rounded development, over-scheduling can lead to stress and burnout. Balance schoolwork, hobbies, and free time. Limit the number of activities to ensure your child has time to relax and unwind. Encourage activities that promote physical exercise and social interaction.

6. Communicate Openly

Maintain open communication with your child about their feelings and concerns regarding the new school year. Listen to their worries and provide reassurance. Regularly check in with them about their day, friends, and any challenges they may be facing. Building a supportive and understanding environment at home can significantly reduce anxiety.

7. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Introduce your children to mindfulness and relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga. These practices can help them manage stress and stay calm during challenging times. Incorporate these activities into your daily routine to create a sense of peace and balance.

8. Plan for Transition Times

Allow extra time for transitions, especially during the first few weeks of school. Whether it’s getting out the door in the morning or transitioning from school to after-school activities, give your children some buffer time. This extra time can reduce the pressure and help them adjust to the new routine more smoothly.

9. Stay Organized

Use calendars, planners, or apps to keep track of important dates, assignments, and activities. Involve your children in using these tools to teach them time management and organizational skills. Staying organized can prevent last-minute scrambles and forgotten tasks, contributing to a more stress-free environment.

10. Take Care of Yourself

As a parent, your well-being is crucial. Ensure you are also taking care of your physical and mental health. Practice self-care, get enough rest, and seek support if needed. When you are calm and balanced, you can better support your children in their back-to-school transition.

Creating a stress-free back-to-school routine requires planning, consistency, and open communication. By implementing these strategies, you can help your children start the school year with confidence and ease, setting the stage for a successful and enjoyable academic year.
